Diesel Particulate Filter
Touareg Features
The 5.0 V10 TDI boasts the revolutionary Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF), making the engine less harmful to the environment. The DPF system effectively removes carbon particulates from the exhaust in two ways. Under normal highway driving conditions, it passively converts the particulates into carbon dioxide. However, if the Touareg spends a lengthy period of time in slower, urban traffic, the DPF system actively combusts the carbon particles at very high temperatures, together with oxygen, to form carbon dioxide.
How does DPF work?
In addition to converting the harmful exhaust gases in the same way as a conventional catalytic converter, the DPF also catches soot particles emitted in the exhaust gas. The DPF continues to collect soot particles until a predetermined level is reached. At this point the DPF will clean itself through a process known as DPF Regeneration. This process increases the temperature within the DPF and burns off the soot particles.
How does the DPF Regeneration work?
In order to carry out the regeneration process the DPF needs to reach and maintain an exhaust temperature higher than its normal operating temperature. Under most conditions the vehicle is able to carry out the regeneration procedure unaided. However, in some circumstances, where the required temperature cannot be achieved (such as frequent short journeys or stop/start driving) the vehicle may fail to regenerate the DPF. If this situation occurs a light will be illuminated on the dashboard.
What can I do if the vehicle fails to regenerate the DPF?
If the vehicle needs help to carry out DPF regeneration, the DPF warning light will light up on the dashboard to indicate this. The vehicle must be driven in a certain way to help increase the exhaust temperature for regeneration. Drive continuously for about 10-15 minutes at a speed of at least 65kph. Select the correct gear (4th or 5th) to maintain engine speed around 2000 rpm. If the conditions described are not met and the DPF light is not switched-off, the level of soot in the DPF will continue to increase and further warning lights will illuminate on the dashboard.
What if more than one light come on together?
If two or more warning lights come on together the DPF regeneration can only be carried out at a Volkswagen Service Centre. It is recommended that the vehicle be driven straight to a Volkswagen Service Centre. Failure to adhere to this recommendation may result in reduced engine power followed by the DPF becoming blocked. If the DPF is blocked to the point where it cannot run through the regeneration process, the DPF will need to be replaced. This would not be covered by the Touareg`s warranty.
Consider your driving style when driving a vehicle with a DPF. It may be worth finding a route home or to work that allows for the driving conditions required for DPF regeneration.
